The Republic of Costa Rica is a mountainous country in Central America with coastlines on the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Seas. The central spine of mountains that runs along its length has several active volcanoes. The country has a population of around 5 million. It stands out from its South American neighbours by being a well-run, stable and safe country. It has invested in education and focused on improving the quality of life of its people. The country is a tropical paradise. Its tiny landmass is home to 5% of the worlds biodiversity and about 25% of its land mass is protected.
